Welcome to Ohana Bay on Rangitoto ki te Tonga (D'Urville Island)!
Nestled in one of New Zealand's most remote and captivating corners, D'Urville Island offers a unique blend of history, conservation, and breathtaking scenery. Known for its rich heritage as the country's top site for argillite tools, this island also plays a key role in New Zealand's ongoing environmental preservation efforts.
At the heart of these conservation efforts is the need for responsible wildlife management. Due to the island's unique ecosystem, certain species must be carefully controlled to ensure the health of native flora and fauna. This includes the culling of invasive species that threaten the balance of D'Urville's delicate environment.
Our hunting and eco-tourism experiences provide an opportunity to understand and engage with these essential conservation efforts. Join us as we work together to protect this remarkable island, all while exploring its stunning landscapes and uncovering the fascinating stories of its past.

The Fallow Deer is a medium-sized species of deer native to Europe but now found in various parts of the world, including New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
Introduced to many regions for hunting and ornamental purposes, fallow deer are highly adaptable and thrive in diverse habitats, from woodlands to grasslands.
Recognizable by their varied coat colors—ranging from spotted fawn to solid black or white—they have a slender build, long legs. Agile and social, fallow deer often form small herds and are known for their graceful movements and alert nature.
The Arapawa Sheep is a breed of feral sheep found primarily on Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds, in the South Island of New Zealand.
Introduced in 1867, there are many theories of how the sheep arrived, the most popular is that they were descendents of Merinostrains from Australia.
Due to living in a rather hostile and very steep terrain, this breed often looks hunched over as they carry their head and tail down most often. They have a light build and long legs. Ewes have no horns, but rams have long spiral horns that often measure over 1 metre (3 ft).
The Red Deer is one of the largest deer species, native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, but now also found in regions such as New Zealand, Australia, and the Americas.
Introduced for sport hunting and conservation efforts, red deer are highly adaptable and thrive in forests, grasslands, and mountainous regions.
Characterized by their reddish-brown coats, they have a strong, muscular build with long legs suited for endurance and agility. Known for their loud, echoing roar during the rut, red deer are social animals, often forming groups that change with the seasons.

I’m Brent Kawharu, and my family has called Ohana Bay home for around 200 years. Born in 1970, I was practically raised with a rifle in hand, learning the ropes of hunting from my father. I spent many years guiding hunters across the South Island, pursuing everything from Red Deer to Himalayan Tahr. I’ve also served as the Hunts Coordinator for the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association and competed in long-range shooting with the NRA. Now, I live at Ohana Bay with my loyal hunting partner, Jess, a German Wirehaired Pointer X Labrador. She’s always by my side and will no doubt make her way into every photo during your hunt here.
